Talking BPD, DBT, and Full Circle Moments: Podcast with Average Superstar TV
Understanding BPD: My Podcast Convo with Loren Lepre
Featured on Average Superstar TV
I was recently featured on the podcast, Average Superstar TV, hosted by my longtime friend, Loren Lepre.
The podcast is an extension of his production company, Average Superstar Films, which has been a staple in the indie film scene for years—producing and promoting independent movies, highlighting underground artists, and amplifying creative voices. Average Superstar TV typically covers topics like film, television, history, and professional wrestling.
Why Talk About BPD?
This episode of Average Superstar TV took things in a different direction. Loren invited me on to talk about something I’m passionate about and professionally meaningful: Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD), and how Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) helps people navigate it.
Some conversations stick with you—not just because of the topic, but because of who you’re having them with.
Sara Weand, Philadelphia DBT therapist & Loren Lepre, circa 2001—long before DBT sessions & film festivals
Loren and I have known each other for over 25 years—back when our biggest responsibilities involved folding band tees and navigating mall culture. Long before therapy degrees and podcast mics, there was Hot Topic—apparently the unexpected training ground for future therapists… Enough said.
What Is BPD Really Like?
In this episode, we talked openly about what BPD actually looks like. I shared how people with BPD experience the world: the emotional intensity, the chronic fear of abandonment, the self-doubt, the impulsive behaviors that are often attempts to escape pain. We also discussed how much stigma still surrounds the diagnosis—and how that stigma makes it harder for people to seek help.
How DBT Supports Healing
As a DBT therapist, I see how DBT gives people with BPD what they need to manage overwhelming emotions, build more stable relationships, and move toward a life that feels worth living.
Having this conversation with someone who’s known me long before I ever became a therapist added a layer of meaning that I don’t often get in interviews.
A Different Kind of Conversation
This episode was a shift from Loren’s usual subject matter—One that he approached with openness, real questions, and curiosity.
If you’re interested in a genuine, down-to-Earth, frank conversation about BPD, head on over and check it out.
